Confetti 2000
"Confetti Conspiracy 2000" A Village on the Stage
By Georgia Rose Park, Confetti 2000 participant, vocalist, and performer from Boston, MA
Standing backstage might seem an inconspicuous place to be in the middle of a show but during Confetti 2000 it was the center of a great village. Community and magic were everywhere regardless of which side of the curtains you were on. At one point in the show two clumps of people emerged from opposite sides of the stage. All the people were facing inwards with their arms around each other in a great huddle. They shuffled and eased their way across the stage until the two clumps merged together and became one.
A Village on the Stage
It was a breathing, tangled, rainbow net of living beings of all shapes, sizes and ages. It was such a simple, tiny moment and it always made every hair on my body stand on end. I was in the clump that came from stage left. It was always so crazy trying to make sure that everyone was there. People would be lost in discussion over what came next, or would have just misplaced their hat or a tussue. It was madness and such a beautiful sight to see everyone arrive all flushed and excited in their bright, crazy costumes. Regardless of where we were coming from, we gathered together backstage for our group entrance and became a small sea of hands and faces and breaths and heartbeats. A tall young man dressed in orange was to my right with his arm around me. I had my arms around him, a grandmother in a tutu and a girl with a cat tail.
My heart felt like it could explode as I reached out my arms to find my place in this larger group and as I gathered in the stragglers. Anticipation and adrenaline rushed through all us as we began to move together out into the lights of the show. Individually we were each so amazing and together we were stunning. It was a powerful moment for me as a performer and as a young woman because I was being seen and I was safe and held within the arms of this new community. I didn't want the show to ever end.
